Primary Mathematics
Primary Mathematics is a complete program designed to equip students with a strong foundation in mathematics. Topics are covered in depth and taught to mastery. By focusing on mathematical understanding, the program aims to help students develop logical thinking skills and critical lifelong problem solving skills. Mathematical concepts are presented in a clear and sequential way to facilitate understanding and confidence. By encouraging students to solve problems in a variety of ways, this program stretches the mind and promotes an understanding of the way mathematical processes work.
This year we will be covering a variety of topics that focus on utilizing a concrete to pictorial and finally an abstract level of understanding. This approach enables students to encounter math in a meaningful way and translates mathematical skills from the concrete to abstract. This allows students to understand concepts before learning the "rules" or formulaic expressions. The units we will be covering this year are as follows:
- Whole Numbers: Numbers to 10,000
- Addition & Subtraction
- Multiplication & Division
- Data Analysis
- Fractions
- Geometry
- Area, Perimeter & Volume
- Measurement: Length, Weight & Capacity
- Money
- Time
- Long Division
I will be encouraging each child to memorize their overall math facts; addition, subtraction and eventually multiplication. The more fluent they are with all of their facts, the easier it will be for them to be able to focus more on learning to understand the concepts. Any support you can provide at home would be greatly appreciated! Some helpful websites are provided on my homepage to provide additional practice at home during their free time.
