Halloween Entry

I am going to write a "spooky" or "funny" Halloween entry but I need your help! If you can start my piece off with a LEAD that will grasp the reader's attention, I will finish it! Think about all the creative ways you could begin your piece. Some interesting ways to begin the entry would be:

• Describe the setting
• Start with dialogue
• Begin in the moment - action
• Use sound words
• Show not tell what you may be feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, etc.

**The story has to be a realistic story. It cannot be completely made up with events that could NOT possibly happen. For example: we could not have a witch that is flying a broom throughout the town of Spookville, because we know that in real life witches do not fly. :)

In math we are working on solving addition sentences by using a mental math strategy. For example, in the number sentence 36 + 8 = ? this is the strategy I would use:

1. I would break up 36 into 34 + 2 because I want to get to the closest 10 and 8 + 2 = 10.
2. I would add 2 + 8 = 10.
3. Then I would take that 10 and add it to 34:  34 + 10 = 44.
4. The final answer to the original problem is 36 + 8 = 44.

How would you explain your mental math strategy to find the sum of 45 + 14?

Reading Reponse - "Stone Fox"

In the story, Stone Fox, at the end of chapter 4 "The Reason" Little Willy learns exactly why Grandfather has given up on life. We are introduced to a new character, Clifford Snyder, the tax collector who is demanding the $500 Grandfather owes in back taxes. What do you predict Little Willy will do now that he realizes that they are in a much bigger dilemma than he thought? When you state your prediction make sure you explain WHY you think that will happen.
