In math we are working on solving addition sentences by using a mental math strategy. For example, in the number sentence 36 + 8 = ? this is the strategy I would use:
1. I would break up 36 into 34 + 2 because I want to get to the closest 10 and 8 + 2 = 10.
2. I would add 2 + 8 = 10.
3. Then I would take that 10 and add it to 34: 34 + 10 = 44.
4. The final answer to the original problem is 36 + 8 = 44.
How would you explain your mental math strategy to find the sum of 45 + 14?
First you would add the ones in each number. When you get the sum of that, add the tens. When you get the sum add booth sums together. Won's you get the sum add them, what you get is your answer. 14+45=59
ReplyDelete1. I rounded 45 to the nearest 10 which is 50.
ReplyDelete2. I counted how much to get to 50 which is 5.
3. I put the 5 under 14.
4. I got 9 by subtracting 14-5=9.
5. I added 50+9=59.
1. I would break up 45 into 30 and 6 because I want to get to the closest 10 and 14+6=20.
ReplyDelete2. I would add 14+6=20.
3. then I would take that 20 and add it to 39 which equals 59.
4. The final answer would be 45+14=59
Looking over your answer, can you see the mistake you made? There is one number you put that I think you incorrectly typed. Take a look carefully and see if you can figure out the mistake. However, all other parts are correct.
Deleteoops! I meant to say 39 instead of 30.

ReplyDeleteYou got the right answer, but look carefully. The two addends you were suppose to add together were not 36 + 8. That was my example. See you if you can explain the problem I gave.
DeleteI would explain it like this:
ReplyDelete1. First, I would break up the 45 into 39+6 to make a ten.
2. Then, I would circle the 14 and the 6 and add them together. It equals 20. 3. I have the 39 left. So I add the 20 and the 39 and there is my answer! It is 59.
3.
Great strategy. Very different than the other students but an accurate strategy!
DeleteI would break up 14 into 9+5 then I would make a loop with the 5 and 45 then add those numbers together which is 50 but then I still have the 9 left which makes 59.
ReplyDeleteThe sum is 59.
Great strategy! When looking at your response, see if you can figure out where you may have to insert punctuation marks in order for the response to make sense. Otherwise, accurate strategy! Good job, Eli!
Delete1. I would break up 14 into 5+9 because I want to get to the nearest ten.
ReplyDelete2.I would add 45+5=50.
3.Then I would add 50+9=59
4. The final answer to the original problem is 45+14=59.
To find the sum to of 45+14 I would:
ReplyDelete1. break 14 into 5+9 because I need to get to the closest 10 and 5+5=10
2.I add 5 and 5 and it gives me 10
3.I add the 10 with the 45 and it gives me 55
4.I add 55 with 9 and that gives me 64 and that is my answer.
Good start Raymond. You may want to check over your second step because that is where you may have gone wrong. Look over your response and see if you can fix it.
Delete1. I would break up 14 into 5+9.
ReplyDelete2. Add the 5 to the 45 because 5+45=50 and it's easy to add when you have a 10.
3.Add the 9 to 50. 9+50=59.
4.The final answer to the original problem is 45+14=59.
1. I would break up 14 into 5 and 9 so i could get the nearest 10.
ReplyDelete2. Then i will add 5 + 45=50
3.Then i will add the 9 and get my answer.
4. My final answer is 45+14=59.
1.Break 45 into 39 and 6
ReplyDelete2.Add the 6 to 14 to = 20 to get to the nearest ten
3.Then add that 20 with 39 which =59
4.45 + 14 =59
I Would Do This:
ReplyDeletea.I would break up the 14 into 10 and 4
b.Next I would add the 10 to 45 which adds up to 55
c.Last I would add the 4 to 55 and our final answer is 59
I would break 45 into 40 and 5 and then I would add 10 and add 4 and then I would add the 5 and this is your number sentence 45 + 14 = 59.
